Religion and Worldviews

Intent
At Bellfield, our Religion and Worldviews curriculum aims to develop thoughtful, respectful, and informed learners who understand the beliefs and values that shape individuals and communities. We approach the subject through three disciplinary lenses: theology (beliefs and concepts), philosophy (thinking and questioning), and social sciences (how religion and worldviews influence lives and societies). Pupils learn about Christianity and other principal religions—Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Islam—as well as the Bahá’í faith and Humanism. Our curriculum promotes curiosity, critical thinking, and respect for diversity, helping children make sense of their own beliefs and those of others. Lessons are adapted to ensure full access and engagement for all pupils.
Implement
In EYFS, children begin by exploring special times, places, and stories, including the Christmas and Easter narratives, through play, discussion, and creative activities. As pupils move through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, learning is carefully sequenced to build knowledge of key beliefs, practices, and celebrations across different faiths and worldviews.
Each unit is framed by key questions, encouraging enquiry and reflection. Pupils use stories, artefacts, texts, and real-life examples to deepen understanding, while developing skills to interpret meaning and consider different perspectives. Philosophy is embedded through discussion and debate, and social sciences through exploring how beliefs influence communities and daily life.
Enrichment opportunities such as visits to places of worship and encounters with faith representatives bring learning to life. For SEND learners, we provide visual supports, simplified texts, and additional adult guidance to ensure inclusion.
Impact
By the end of EYFS, children will recognise and talk about special times and stories, including Christmas and Easter, and begin to understand that people have different beliefs. By the end of primary school, pupils will have secure knowledge of Christianity and other principal religions, as well as Humanism and the Bahá’í faith.
They will be able to ask and answer thoughtful questions, make connections between beliefs and practices, and reflect on their own ideas. All children leave Bellfield with respect for diversity, an understanding of how worldviews shape lives, and the ability to think critically about big questions, preparing them for life in a multicultural world.
