KS1 - Year 1/2
Year 1/2 curriculum overview
Intent
At Bellfield, our Key Stage 1 curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and confidence in every child. We aim to build strong foundations in reading, writing, and mathematics while nurturing a love of learning across all subjects. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop independence as learners. Our curriculum promotes resilience, teamwork, and respect, preparing pupils for the next stage of their education. We believe learning should be meaningful and exciting, connecting knowledge to real-life experiences and the wider world.
Implementation
Learning in Key Stage 1 is carefully sequenced to ensure progression and depth. Core subjects are taught daily, with phonics providing a strong foundation for reading and writing. Mathematics focuses on fluency and problem-solving, while science lessons encourage enquiry and hands-on investigation.
Creative subjects such as art, music, and design technology allow children to express themselves and develop practical skills. History and geography bring the past and the world to life through stories, maps, and artefacts.
Wider opportunities enrich learning—educational visits, outdoor learning, themed days, and workshops provide real-world experiences that make learning memorable. For pupils with SEND, lessons are adapted with tailored resources and support to ensure inclusion and success.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 1, children will have developed secure knowledge in core subjects and a growing confidence in applying their skills across the curriculum. They will be curious, enthusiastic learners who can work independently and collaboratively. Pupils will have experienced a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom, fostering creativity, resilience, and a love of learning. This strong foundation prepares them for Key Stage 2 and equips them with the skills and confidence to thrive.
