Design & Technology

Intent
Our Design and Technology curriculum is designed to inspire creativity and curiosity from the very beginning of a child’s learning journey. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children explore simple construction and materials through carefully planned play-based experiences, encouraging them to think, plan, and talk about what they create. As they progress through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, this foundation develops into a deeper understanding of materials, mechanisms, and processes. By prioritising disciplinary knowledge, we enable children to design and make with confidence while fostering the stamina and resilience needed to persevere through challenges. We are committed to inclusion, ensuring pupils with SEND receive tailored support and adapted resources so that every child can access and succeed in Design and Technology. Our aim is to nurture problem-solvers who can apply their knowledge and skills to real-world contexts with creativity and purpose.
Implementation
Learning begins in EYFS with opportunities to explore textures, shapes, and joining techniques, helping children develop early design thinking and language. In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, lessons are carefully sequenced to build secure knowledge of structures, materials, and systems. This knowledge is applied through practical projects where children plan, create, and evaluate their designs, learning to refine and improve their work. Mistakes are viewed as valuable learning opportunities, promoting resilience and confidence. Cross-curricular links with mathematics and science strengthen understanding of measurement, forces, and energy, ensuring that children see the relevance of design and technology in the wider world. For pupils with SEND, tasks are adapted with additional scaffolding, visual prompts, and practical support to ensure full participation. Assessment focuses on both knowledge and practical outcomes, enabling pupils to articulate their design decisions and demonstrate technical proficiency.
Impact
By the end of EYFS, children will have explored and used a variety of materials and tools safely, begun to plan and talk about their creations, and shown curiosity and creativity in their designs. By the end of primary school, pupils will have a secure understanding of how and why things are made and will be confident in designing and making products that are functional and appealing. They will demonstrate determination and creativity, approaching challenges with a positive mindset and resilience. This strong foundation prepares all children—including those with SEND—for the next stage of learning and equips them with the skills and confidence to thrive in an increasingly innovative and technological world.
