Music

Intent

At Bellfield, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of music and ensure every child has the opportunity to experience the joy of making and appreciating music.

Our curriculum enables pupils to learn an instrument, perform with confidence, and express themselves creatively. Children are introduced to a wide range of musical genres and taught to listen, sing, play, evaluate, analyse, and compose across diverse styles, traditions, and historical periods. We are committed to inclusion, ensuring pupils with SEND receive adapted resources and support so that all children can access and succeed in music.

Implement

In EYFS, children explore songs, melodies, and percussion instruments through adult-led sessions and continuous provision, developing early musical awareness and enjoyment. FS2 follows the English Model Music Curriculum, ensuring progression through to Year 6.

Our long-term plan introduces pupils to varied genres, musical language, and composition techniques, while medium-term plans sequence knowledge for depth and continuity.

We enrich learning through a bespoke partnership with Hull Music Service, providing instrumental tuition, performance opportunities, and staff CPD to ensure high-quality delivery. For SEND learners, lessons are adapted with visual prompts, simplified tasks, and additional adult support to ensure full participation.

Impact

Our sequenced curriculum develops musical skills progressively, revisiting and mastering key concepts over time. Pupils gain confidence in performing, composing, and discussing music, while building an appreciation of diverse genres. Formative and summative assessments guide planning and ensure all children—including those with SEND—achieve success and enjoyment in music. By the time they leave Bellfield, pupils will have the confidence, creativity, and cultural awareness to continue their musical journey beyond primary school.
