Geography

Intent

Our geography curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity about the world and inspire a lifelong love of learning about places, people, and environments.

From the earliest years in EYFS, children begin to explore their immediate surroundings, developing an understanding of where they live and how it connects to the wider world. As they progress through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, this knowledge expands to include continents, countries, physical and human features, and the processes that shape our planet.

We aim to equip pupils with the disciplinary knowledge and vocabulary needed to think like geographers—asking questions, interpreting data, and making connections. Through this, children develop a sense of responsibility for the environment and an appreciation of diverse cultures and communities. For pupils with SEND, learning is adapted and supported to ensure full access and success in geography.

Implementation

In EYFS, children learn through play and exploration, observing their local environment and beginning to use simple geographical language.

In Key Stage 1, pupils build on this by studying their local area and contrasting locations, using maps and photographs to develop spatial awareness. In Key Stage 2, learning becomes broader and deeper, covering global geography, physical processes such as rivers and mountains, and human geography including settlements and trade.

Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge and skills, supported by high-quality resources and practical activities. Fieldwork is a key component, enabling children to investigate real environments and apply their learning beyond the classroom. Wider opportunities such as educational visits, local walks, and residential trips enrich the curriculum, bringing geography to life and fostering a sense of adventure and discovery. For SEND learners, we provide differentiated tasks, visual supports, and additional adult guidance to ensure inclusion and achievement.

Impact

By the end of EYFS, children will have begun to notice and describe features of their immediate environment and understand simple concepts of place.

By the end of primary school, pupils will have a secure understanding of the world’s physical and human features, confidently use maps and geographical tools, and apply their knowledge to ask and answer questions about the world around them. They will demonstrate curiosity, respect for different cultures, and an awareness of environmental issues. These experiences prepare all children—including those with SEND—for the next stage of learning and help them become informed, responsible global citizens.
