Intent

At Bellfield, we want all of our pupils to be accepting and respectful of all cultures and faiths in order to make informed judgements about religious and moral situations. We encourage them to develop a sense of self whilst learning that we are all different. We want all children to be resilient and independent; preparing them for lifelong learning.

Implement

Our Religious Education curriculum is set out in our long term plan and exposes children from our EYFS through to year 6 to a wide range of religions enabling an enquiry-based approach to teaching and learning.

Christianity is taught across all year groups developing children’s learning in a progressive way which is set out across our medium term plans. From EYFS to year 6, children are also taught about Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Judaism.

To enrich our children’s knowledge and understanding of other religions and cultures, each term every year group focuses on a specific country and religion they have not been taught about that academic year. This enhances the opportunities children are offered for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

At Bellfield, we also believe in the importance in exposing our children to a wide range of religious and non-religious (including humanist) festivals and celebrations. Some of these include: lent, Mother’s Day, Eid-ul-Fitr, EUFA Women’s Euro Championships and Remembrance Sunday.

Impact

Our children will be able to talk about the wide range of religions and cultures which they have learnt about and will be able to talk about how they are similar and different to their own thoughts, ideas and beliefs.

Using an enquiry-based model, our children’s critical thinking skills will be developed, their motivation to learn increased and their knowledge and understanding of, and empathy with people and their beliefs, religions or otherwise, will be enhanced. Our children will be able to talk freely and confidently about their own choices and decisions concerning religion and belief.

We use formative and summative assessment throughout our religion education units to inform our planning sequence. Our assessment criteria for each year group accompanies our sequences of lessons to ensure seamless planning and delivery.
