Intent

At Bellfield Primary School, we believe that literacy and communication are essential life skills. Our writing curriculum is designed to help children cultivate both transcriptional skills and compositional techniques, empowering them to express themselves effectively and creatively in both spoken and written forms.

The foundation not only equips our pupils with the told the need to communicate confidently but also fosters a love for lifelong learning. Through a language-rich curriculum, we offer diverse opportunities for children to write for various audiences and purposes, enhancing their ability to connect with the world around them.

Implement

At Bellfield Primary School, we have developed a writing sequence designed to guide children in becoming successful writers. From Foundation Stage 1 through to Year 6, our writing journey focuses on building strong foundational knowledge. We prioritise oracy as a key skill for developing confident writers, offering a range of opportunities for children to engage in spoken language activities that enhance their writing abilities.

Our sequence is structures to help pupils explore key feature needed to write for a variety of purposes. These units also provide ample opportunities for children to apply and embed newly learned grammar and vocabulary skills, reinforcing their learning. The content of our writing curriculum is carefully mapped out in our long term and medium-term planning to ensure continuity and progression across all year groups.

Writing for Pleasure

At Bellfield, we recognise the importance of writing and the desire our children have to express their creativity. To nurture that enthusiasm, we allow children to write for pleasure which offers pupils the freedom to plan and create any type of writing that inspires them. This approach allows them to explore different styles, express their individuality, and develop a love for writing in a way that feels meaningful and enjoyable to them.

Word of the Week

Following on from our belief of how important a wide and varied vocabulary is, we have created a ‘Word of the Week’ plan. Each year group is given an overview of vocabulary which links to their current topic. Each new word is presented and taught to children weekly. Our children are given the opportunity to think about the word and its meaning, the word class associated with the word, how to use the word correctly in a sentence and

synonyms and antonyms associated with our word. Our children are then actively encouraged to include this wider vocabulary across their writing.

Impact

Our Primary goal is to inspire our pupils to write with purpose and to understand how different writing styles can serve the I the future. We aim to foster independent writers who develop a lifelong passion for writing. Recognising that purposeful writing is vital across all areas of our curriculum, we provide ample opportunities for our students to apply and transfer writing skills in meaningful contexts.
