 Computing

Intent

At Bellfield pupils will be encouraged to confidently navigate the digital world that they live in. Children will become creators of technology rather than consumers.

The computing curriculum is constructed to offer a high-quality teaching and learning experience based on the acquisition of key knowledge and computing skills across the school. Knowledge will be progressive and computing skills sequential. Pupils will be

engaged, as projects are purposeful and demand an outcome and be aware of the importance of computing and technology in wider society. They will be aware of responsible internet usage and how to keep themselves safe online.

Implementation

Computing is taught in accordance with the National Curriculum, following the Mr Andrews Online scheme of learning. A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.

Our computing curriculum begins in the EYFS with them developing an understanding of the purpose of ICT and being able to use simple electronic devices. This will lay the foundations for the pupils moving into Key Stage 1.

The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world. Pupils should also be equipped with the correct knowledge of computing ethics and the skills of Self Protection to enable them to use the internet safely and responsibly.

Impact

Following our computing curriculum, children demonstrate strong foundations of skills and attitudes that enable them to use technology competently and safely in society. We want to ensure children are prepared for an ever-changing society and will have problem-solving skills from computational thinking to allow them to approach difficult tasks with high-levels of resilience. It is the hope that this will lead to good job opportunities in the computing field.
