Intent

At Bellfield we want all children to have a passion for life-long learning. Our curriculum will enable pupils to discover their interests and open their eyes to future possibilities. We encourage pupils to have the freedom to explore and express themselves through a range of medium.

Skills and techniques will be taught alongside the study of artists and their work. We will build upon the progression of skills to enable our children to critique and improve their work further, developing a more rigorous understanding of art and design. . Wherever possible, cross-curricular links and visits to galleries and exhibitions are made in order to ensure that real life links are made between art all around us and the art that we create.

Implementation

Within our EYFS, pupils will have exposure to drawing, colours, colour mixing, sculpture and collage. Our children will focus on a specific aspect of art and design each term linked to their topic.

Initially in FS1, children are taught how to draw a person which then progresses to drawing a self-portrait in FS2.

Our FS1 children are taught how to create a simple shade using one colour which then progresses to our FS2 children experiment with mixing a variety of primary colours to use in their paintings. Across our EYFS, we encourage our children to use both thick and medium brushes to add detail.

In FS1, our children use playdough with a range of different textures to develop the skills of moulding shaping, patting, rolling and cutting to create sculptures. This progresses to our FS2 children using clay to develop their skills of moulding, shaping, cutting, rolling and joining.

Within our EYFS, our FS1 children are given the opportunity to explore a range of materials where they can create a free collage moving on to our FS2 children exploring how to overlap and place materials to create a free collage.

In Key Stages 1 and 2, our Art and Design curriculum has been planned to give our children the opportunity to acquire progressive skills which they can then apply across the following aspects:

  • Painting
  • Collage
  • Sculpture
  • Textiles
  • Drawing

Each term we focus on a specific aspect of art and design. Our long term planning gives an overview of the wide range of projects we undertake which are linked to our current topic. Our medium term planning sets out a progressive sequence of lessons from research, developing and honing skills to applying our newly acquired knowledge and skills to create a final piece. We take inspiration form a wide range of artists to help us appreciate style and form which help influence our own ideas.

Impact

At Bellfield, we want to enable our children to design and create original and inspired pieces of art. We teach our children to develop imagination and creativity and to have a sense of pride in both their process and final pieces.

Understanding the importance of self-evaluation and how to use these learning points enables our children’s work to be progressive over their time at Bellfield.

Our children display their artwork for the community in ‘art galleries’ and they share their finished pieces with their parents and carers and teach them their newly acquired skills in workshops held in class.

We use formative and summative assessment throughout our art units to inform our planning sequence. Our assessment criteria for each year group accompanies our sequences of lessons to ensure seamless planning and delivery.
